Mateo is responsible for general oversight of the organization,
including managing all USP staff and site relationships.
Mateo maintains the organization's finances and provides
leadership and guidance to the Board of Directors. This is
Mateo's fifth year as Executive Director and Tenth year with USP.
Mateo graduated from Stanford University where he directed
community programs and has worked with youth issues on local,
state, national, and international fronts.
Amy Scott, Program Director
A California
native, Amy grew up in many different places as an “Air Force
brat”! She studied Biology and Psychology at Northwestern
University, but the cold Chicago winters blew her back to the west
coast, where she feels most at home with California’s ocean,
mountains, forests, and deserts! As a corps member for USP in
2003-04, Amy worked at
Bryant
Elementary School and Enola D. Maxwell Middle School. She has
always been fascinated by human development and loves to watch the
youth with whom she works grow and learn. Amy’s passions include
empowering young people to participate in electoral politics,
reforming education, singing, and exploring. She plans to return
to school for community public health and to travel in Central and
South America.
Cheri Garamendi, Corps Leader, 2004-05
San Francisco Rec and Park
Cheri grew up
in a rural community located east of San Francisco, in the
foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. After studying at the University
of San Diego and the University of Madrid, Spain, she completed
her B.A. in Child Development at San Francisco State University.
Her life-long commitment to children and service make the Urban
Service Project a perfect fit for her. She is currently enjoying
her second year working with San Francisco’s youth through the
Recreation & Park Department’s Youth Stewardship Program. She is
also excited about her new leadership role within USP and is happy
to be a part of a great team.
Kristen Honma, Corps Leader, 2004-05
Bryant Elementary School
Kristen grew
up in the Richmond district of San Francisco out near Ocean
Beach. After finishing high school at George Washington, she was
accepted to UC Santa Cruz where she studied Psychology and
Education. After 18 years of school, she thought it was time to
take a break and find a job where she could work with youth and
help their community in positive ways. SFUSP was the perfect
opportunity for her, and she was lucky enough to get hired. This
year is her second year working with SFUSP, and it has been an
incredibly positive experience. She plans on applying to and
attending graduate school in the fall of 2005 for a Master’s
Degree in Social Work.
Greg Grossman, Board Member and President
Greg is an
attorney in San Francisco. He served as a
SFUSP corps member in 1994-1995 at
Potrero Hill Middle School, now Enola Maxwell Middle School, and
has stayed close to the program ever since. Before attending law
school, Greg worked with numerous youth camps and at the U.S.
Department of Justice conducting legislative affairs for community
policing programs. Greg received his BA in Political Economy from
U.C.
Berkeley in 1994 and his JD from UCLA School of Law in 2000. Greg
lives in San Francisco and joined SFUSP's board in 2002.
Jennifer
Bunshoft, Board Member and Secretary
Jennifer Bunshoft
recently joined the California Attorney General's Office in San
Francisco. Prior to joining the Attorney General's Office, she was
an attorney with the law firm Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP.
Jennifer graduated from U.C. Hastings College of the Law in 1998.
Prior to attending law school, Jennifer served as a SFUSP corps
member in 1994-1995. In that capacity, she placed and supported
volunteers in the public schools, formed and facilitated
partnerships between schools and businesses, and organized Youth
Service Day. Jennifer received her BA in History from
Middlebury College in 1994. She is a San Francisco native, and
currently lives in San Francisco.
Craig Mercer, Board Member and Treasurer
Craig is the Manager of Financial Reporting at The PMI Group,
Inc., a mortgage insurance company in Walnut Creek, California.
Previously, Craig worked as Controller for a hi-tech company in
San Francisco as well as in public accounting for
PricewaterhouseCoopers in San Francisco, Auckland and Bangkok.
Craig received his BS in Business Administration from U.C.
Berkeley in 1994. Craig lives with his wife Gia in San
Francisco.
Nadine J. Burke, MD, MPH; Board Member 2004-present
Nadine is a Pediatrician at California Pacific Medical
Center where she serves as the Medical Director of Pediatric
Health Parity Programs. She focuses on the Bayview Hunters Point
community in her work to eliminate health disparities in our
city. She completed her residency at Stanford University Medical
Center in June of 2005 after earning a Master of Public Health
Degree from Harvard University in 2002. Nadine attended medical
school at U.C. Davis where she earned the
Gabriel Smilkstein
Award for outstanding service to the medically needy. Prior to
that, she earned her undergraduate degree in Integrative Biology
from U.C. Berkeley.
Raymond Chan, CFA. Board Member, 2003 – Present
Raymond is a portfolio manager and equity analyst for Franklin
Templeton Investments, based out of
San Mateo, CA. He has been with the company since 1996. Raymond
received his B.S. in Business Administration, with a concentration
in finance, from USC in 1996 and the CFA designation in 2001.
Raymond currently lives in San Francisco.
John
Noonan, Board Member and Founder
John Noonan is a graduate of Yale Law School, Harvard Business
School and Harvard College. Prior to graduate school, John
co-founded the Urban Service Project with Robert Carlson, Ann
Kletz and Agape Looper. John is also a co-founder and
director of Scholar Partners, an educational media and publishing
company.
Leilani Sanchez, Board Member, 2004 – Present
Leilani was born in Augsburg, Germany. She’s lived in San
Francisco for over 20 years. Having
attended Bryant Elementary,
James Denman Middle School, and Balboa High School in San
Francisco as a child, she fully supports USP’s commitment in
providing role models and after school programs for these schools
and other schools in San Francisco. Leilani has a BA in both Legal
Studies and Philosophy from the University of California at
Berkeley. She is an Institutional Equity Sales Representative at
CIBC World Markets and
has been with the company since 1999.
