Board Member Position Description
The
SFUSP Board of Directors provides strength, support and inspiration
to the staff, Corps Members, fellow Board members, and the community
we serve. The primary responsibility of the Board of Directors is
to keep the organization on track by providing vision, raising
money, and political support. The Board is a vital link between the
community and the San Francisco Urban Service Project.
Responsibilities include, but are not
limited to:
Leadership
-Be committed to the Mission, Vision,
and work of SFUSP (see SFUSP brochure) and ensure that the
organization and its programs stay true to the mission and vision of
the organization
-Work with staff and Board members as
a partner towards achievement of our goals
-Create and maintain a long-term
vision with the staff and the community
-Represent, and respect the values
and concerns of San Francisco communities
-Evaluate how well the Board is
managing itself
-Evaluate oneself in managing
self-management responsibilities
-Serve on at least one of the Board
committees
Organizational Development
-Contribute
personal funds to support the work of the organization
-Be
actively involved in raising funds for the organization, through
such efforts as a Major Donor campaign, special events, and Board
mixers.
-Participate in public relations and
be an ambassador for SFUSP in the community
-Be actively involved in setting
fundraising goals for the Board
Personnel
-Hire, evaluate, and monitor the
Executive Director
-Provide support and guidance to the
Executive Director
-Trust and honor the Executive
Director
Oversight
-Maintain general oversight of the
agency and not “micro-manage” the day-to-day operations
-Assume all fiduciary and legal
responsibilities for SFUSP
-Maintain Fiscal oversight
-Review and approve financial
statements and budgets
Ethical
Standards
-Maintain the highest ethical
standards for the organization
-Be ethically responsible to the
communities that we serve.
Board Member Qualities and Expectations
Board Members are
asked to interpret the organizations work and values to the
community. Board members represent the organization and act as a
spokesperson.
Some qualities and expectations we look for in leadership;
Qualities
-Passionate about developing young
diverse leaders between the ages of 18-26 whom in turn work to
develop and provide resources to children and youth ages 3-18
-
Committed to learning and contributing to diversity with regards to
race, creed, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status,
etc..
-Willing to share resources with the organization
-Open to continuous learning
-Flexible
-Identify with, respect, and/or represent the diverse experiences of
San Francisco communities
-
Patience to participate in group consensus process
-Value the differences and skills individuals bring to the Board
-
A sense of humor and fun!
Expectations
-Attend 2 ½ hour Board meetings once a month
-Three-year term commitment with the option to extend, if interested
-Serve on Board committee, and attend all committee meetings
(generally once every other month)
-Make a yearly donation to SFUSP of what is, for each Board member,
a substantial amount
-Actively participate in fundraising activities, including seeking
funds for the organization through individual solicitations, events,
and other venues
-Follow through on commitment that one makes
-Stay committed to the values, goals, and programs of SFUSP
-Actively support and participate in organizational programs
-Participate in Board member planning and teambuilding retreats
-Address challenging issues in the program and community
-Take full responsibility for one’s behavior and its effect on
others
-Be mindful of
Board’s self-management responsibilities-Share skills with other
Board members, staff, and Corps Members.
